Des Moines, IA – Temperatures will drop to near or below freezing within hours, creating potential frost and slick spots on roads across northern Iowa by early Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, lows will fall to 30–34°F tonight across northern counties, with a chance of light rain mixing with snow through about 8 a.m. Sunday. Areas along Interstate 35 from Mason City to Ames could see brief reductions in visibility and isolated slick patches on bridges and overpasses.
The cold deepens Sunday night into early Monday, when nearly the entire state is expected to fall to or below 32°F. Cities including Des Moines, Waterloo, Fort Dodge, and Cedar Rapids are likely to see lows between 27°F and 32°F by sunrise Monday, increasing the risk of widespread frost and potential damage to early-season crops and gardens.
Drivers should watch for patchy frost on untreated roads during the early morning hours, especially in rural areas. Residents are urged to cover or bring in sensitive plants and ensure outdoor pets have adequate shelter.
