Fort Wayne, Indiana – Thunderstorms are expected to develop between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday across northern Indiana, with the evening commute at risk as heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds impact major routes including I-69 and the Indiana Toll Road.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a marginal severe risk is in place, with a few storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts near 60 mph along with frequent lightning and bursts of heavy rainfall. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated stronger storms could still disrupt travel and utilities.
Cities including Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, Warsaw, and Goshen are in the primary impact zone. Drivers may encounter reduced visibility, ponding on roads, and brief slowdowns during heavier downpours. Gusty winds could bring down small branches or cause isolated power flickers.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and remain alert for warnings during peak storm hours. Avoid travel during the heaviest rain if possible and never drive through water-covered roads.
Storms will exit by late evening, with cooler and drier conditions settling in for the weekend. Highs will drop into the 60s and low 70s Saturday and Sunday. Additional updates are expected if stronger storms develop.
