Eureka, CA – Isolated thunderstorms could develop across portions of Northern California Tuesday afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for lightning in areas already under elevated wildfire conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, high-resolution forecast models indicate the greatest chance for thunderstorm development is across eastern Trinity County Tuesday afternoon. While most storm activity is expected to remain east of the coast, some forecast models suggest thunderstorms could develop farther west, with isolated activity lingering into the evening and overnight hours.
Forecasters noted that each modeled thunderstorm represents the potential for storms producing radar reflectivity of at least 30 dBZ, with locations showing multiple model signals having a greater likelihood of storm development.
The National Weather Service said a Red Flag Warning remains in effect for Trinity County, northeastern Humboldt County, and southwestern Siskiyou County, where dry vegetation, low humidity, and the possibility of lightning could increase the risk of new wildfire starts.
Even storms that produce little rainfall can generate cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty, erratic winds, creating dangerous fire weather conditions.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to remain weather aware throughout the afternoon and evening, particularly if spending time outdoors in the mountains or forested areas. Those in Red Flag Warning areas should avoid activities that could spark a wildfire and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Additional forecast updates may be issued as thunderstorms develop across the region.
