Newark, N.J. – Parts of northeast New Jersey could see isolated severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon, with strong wind gusts posing the biggest threat for evening commuters.
According to the National Weather Service New York office, a marginal to slight risk for severe weather stretches across northeast New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley, and southern Connecticut between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday. Cities like Paterson, Newark, and Englewood lie in the marginal zone, where storms may bring brief but dangerous wind gusts over 50 mph.
Localized power outages and downed tree limbs are possible, especially along I-80, Route 17, and through Bergen and Passaic counties. Though widespread storms are not expected, residents are urged to secure outdoor items and stay weather-aware during the evening rush.
In southern Connecticut, including Waterbury, New Haven, and Bridgeport, similar storm risks exist, particularly in open or elevated areas. The primary concern remains isolated damaging winds, not flooding or hail.
Storm activity is expected to taper off overnight, but residents should monitor for any upgraded advisories through Friday. The next full NWS update is due Friday morning.
