Chicago, Illinois – National Weather Service survey teams are fanning out across northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana today after a widespread severe weather outbreak produced probable tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds, large hail and flash flooding across the region Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, Monday’s late morning and afternoon storms generated numerous preliminary storm reports spanning northeast Illinois, east-central Illinois and northwest Indiana. Meteorologists are now conducting ground surveys in some of the hardest-hit communities to determine whether tornadoes touched down and to assign any official ratings.
Preliminary reports indicate several probable tornado paths, along with extensive straight-line wind damage that affected neighborhoods, roadways and infrastructure across the Chicago metropolitan area. Large hail was also reported in multiple communities, while torrential rainfall triggered areas of flash flooding that temporarily inundated streets and low-lying locations.
The broader regional storm reports show wind damage extending well beyond northern Illinois into portions of Indiana, Michigan and the Ohio Valley, highlighting the widespread impact of the powerful storm system.
Residents who experienced storm damage are encouraged to continue sharing photos and reports with the National Weather Service. Officials ask that any submissions include the nearest road intersection or recognizable landmark to help survey teams verify damage locations.
Survey results will be released as assessments are completed, and the National Weather Service says updates, including any confirmed tornado ratings, will be posted through its Chicago office.
