Fargo, ND – When Morgan L., 45, lost control of his snowmobile on South Tulaby Lake Lane near the North Dakota–Minnesota border, he was thrown several feet and suffered multiple injuries. He wasn’t the only one.

According to the Accident Data Center, about 200 people die each year in snowmobile accidents across the country, and local authorities say early-season awareness is critical as trails open across the northern plains.

North Dakota maintains roughly 2,800 miles of groomed trails, managed by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department. All snowmobiles operated in the state must be registered, with a $50 fee for two years, and riders must carry proof of registration while on state trails.

Insurance is mandatory for snowmobilers using any state-managed trail, with minimum liability coverage required. Helmets are required for riders under age 18, and trail permits are mandatory for nonresidents, costing $25 per sled.

While roads and road shoulders are generally closed to snowmobiles, riders may operate in road ditches, following the same direction as traffic. When using ditches, the posted highway speed limit applies, and riders must yield to all road vehicles.

Officials with North Dakota Parks & Recreation remind snowmobilers that trail grooming and maintenance rely heavily on safe and responsible operation. “Every year we see riders take unnecessary risks with speed and night visibility,” said one department spokesperson. “Our goal is zero fatalities this winter.”
