Raleigh, NC – Residents across North Carolina are being urged to prepare for periods of potentially heavy rain through Wednesday, with the highest risk from Monday night through Tuesday in the state’s coastal plain.
According to the National Weather Service office in Raleigh, forecast models show rainfall totals of up to 2.5 inches across much of the state. A higher-end scenario, which carries about a 10% chance, could bring up to 5 inches in localized areas, especially near Goldsboro, Greenville, and Wilson.
Forecasters say lighter showers may begin as early as Monday morning or afternoon and could continue into Wednesday afternoon. The heaviest rainfall is expected overnight Monday into Tuesday, raising the potential for localized flooding, hazardous driving conditions, and travel delays.
The system is linked to a coastal low-pressure area moving inland, which will increase moisture and instability across the region. Eastern counties, including Wayne, Lenoir, Pitt, and Edgecombe, are expected to see the heaviest impacts.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and monitor road conditions, particularly in low-lying or flood-prone areas. The NWS cautions that conditions could change quickly depending on the track of the coastal system.
