According to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Johnsonville Rescue Squad on East Broad Street on September 13, 2024, at around 9:25 p.m. after receiving reports of a gunshot victim.

Investigators determined the shooting happened in the 900 block of Midway Highway in the Johnsonville community. Deputies say the suspect, identified as Kenneth Washington Jr., 36, of Hemingway, allegedly drove a co-defendant to the scene and remained there during the crime. Authorities report that the incident led to the child’s death.

The sheriff’s office said Washington was also accused of helping remove the co-defendant from the crime scene afterward and failing to contact law enforcement or render aid to the victim.

Washington was arrested on September 16, 2025, and is being held at the Florence County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing. He has been charged with murder under South Carolina Code Ann. 16-03-0010.
