Rensselaer, IN – Winter road preparations are underway in northwest Indiana as the state’s Department of Transportation begins seasonal inspections on its snowplow and service trucks.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), inspections at the Rensselaer Subdistrict kicked off this week. Each vehicle goes through a two-station process to ensure readiness for the heavy demands of snow and ice removal in the coming months.

The first checkpoint is the “physical” inspection, which covers license plates, lighting, radios, mirrors, safety items, and visible wear. Vehicles then move to the “mechanical” station, where technicians test hydraulics, plows, engines, and other critical systems. INDOT says mechanics take a closer look at every component to confirm equipment is safe and reliable.

A designated inspector at each station records any issues. Non-critical problems are logged for later repair, while more serious defects can sideline a truck until it is fixed. “If an issue is found that DOES impair the vehicle/equipment from doing its job, it’s noted on the form and must be repaired before the truck goes back on the road,” INDOT explained in its update.

The fall inspection cycle helps INDOT ensure that snowplows, salt spreaders, and other essential trucks are in top condition before the first major winter storm hits Indiana highways.
