Raleigh, N.C. – Heat shimmers off pavement as temperatures surge toward the upper 90s across central North Carolina late this morning. Even a short walk outside will feel much hotter, and the combination of intense humidity and building thunderstorms could create rapidly changing conditions before the day ends.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. for much of central North Carolina, including Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, Rocky Mount and surrounding communities. Afternoon heat index values could reach 110 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

The heat will build steadily through the afternoon before scattered thunderstorms begin to develop later in the day. The National Weather Service says a few storms could become strong to locally severe, with damaging wind gusts posing the primary threat. While tornado potential appears limited, forecasters continue to monitor the atmosphere for isolated stronger storms capable of producing hazardous weather.

Drivers on I-40, I-440, I-540 and U.S. 1 should stay alert for rapidly changing visibility and slick roads if thunderstorms develop during the evening commute. Outdoor events, athletic activities and construction projects should include frequent breaks, shade and plenty of water.

Residents without reliable air conditioning face the greatest risk during the hottest part of the afternoon. Check on elderly neighbors, children and pets, and never leave anyone inside a parked vehicle. Heat illness can develop quickly when temperatures and humidity combine at these levels.

Sunday stays very hot with highs around 96 degrees before scattered thunderstorms return during the afternoon. Monday brings additional showers and thunderstorms with a cooler high near 90 degrees. Another round of scattered storms is expected Tuesday as highs remain in the mid-90s before temperatures gradually ease later in the week.

The 6-to-10-day outlook favors above-normal temperatures across North Carolina, signaling that midsummer heat will likely continue beyond next week despite periodic thunderstorms.

Stay weather-aware through this evening, and keep alerts enabled in case severe thunderstorm warnings are issued. Are you noticing the heat where you live, or are storms already beginning to build?
