Manchester, N.H. – Hazy skies are hanging over southern New Hampshire late this morning, and the air already looks different before the first showers begin to develop. Smoke, warm temperatures and scattered thunderstorms could combine to create changing conditions through the afternoon, making it a day to stay weather-aware across Manchester and surrounding communities.

According to the National Weather Service and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until 11 p.m. for much of the state. A Code Orange designation means particle pollution may become unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, people with asthma or other lung disease, and anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Weather conditions will become more active as the day progresses. The National Weather Service calls for a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon, with south winds increasing to 10 to 15 mph and gusts reaching 25 mph. While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few thunderstorms could produce brief downpours, gusty winds and dangerous lightning. An isolated stronger storm cannot be completely ruled out, so residents should monitor updates through the evening.

Motorists on Interstate 93, Interstate 293, Route 101 and the Everett Turnpike should prepare for changing visibility as smoke lingers and showers develop. Slow down on wet pavement and allow extra stopping distance during heavier rain.

Conditions improve dramatically Sunday as sunshine returns with a high near 80 degrees. Monday looks even warmer with abundant sunshine and highs in the mid-80s. Another weather system arrives Tuesday, bringing increasing clouds and a 30% chance of showers, followed by a higher likelihood of rain Tuesday night and additional showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday.

Looking farther ahead, the Climate Prediction Center favors above-normal temperatures across New England during the 6-to-10-day outlook, suggesting a warmer stretch will continue into late next week.

Keep outdoor activity limited if smoke begins affecting your breathing, and have a way to receive weather alerts before thunderstorms arrive later today. Are skies looking hazy where you are, or have showers already started?
