Morehead City, N.C. – Strong to severe storms could sweep through eastern North Carolina between 4 and 8 p.m. Friday, with damaging winds posing the greatest threat along and east of Highway 17.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the primary hazard will be strong wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs and power lines. Isolated small hail is also possible. The highest risk zone includes communities such as New Bern, Morehead City, Cape Hatteras, and Kitty Hawk.

Much of the coastal plain falls under a Level 2 (Slight Risk) for severe weather, while areas farther inland near Greenville and Kinston are under a marginal threat. Storms are expected to develop during the late afternoon and track eastward into the evening. Localized power outages, brief heavy downpours, and minor road debris could impact evening travel.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge phones and devices in advance, and monitor weather alerts through NOAA Weather Radio or local media. Storm timing may affect school dismissal and commute hours along U.S. Route 70 and Highway 17.

Skies will remain mostly cloudy after the storms pass, with temperatures hovering in the low to mid-80s. Additional watches or warnings may be issued if storm development intensifies.
