Birmingham, Alabama – Northern Alabama residents should prepare for potentially severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening, with damaging winds and large hail posing the biggest threats.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, areas north of I-20—including Hamilton, Jasper, and Gadsden—face a Level 2 (slight) risk for severe storms starting late Friday. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph, and hail may grow to quarter size in isolated cells.
Most of Central Alabama, including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Auburn, falls under a Level 1 (marginal) risk. Storms in these zones may still be strong, but the chances of widespread severe impacts are lower. The main hazard across the region will be damaging wind gusts, especially during the late afternoon commute and into the evening hours.
Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, especially if traveling through affected areas like I-22, U.S. 278, or I-65. Keep phones charged and secure access to a sturdy shelter if warnings are issued.
Storm chances are expected to increase again over the weekend as additional waves move through.
