Buffalo, NY – Residents in upstate New York can expect lake effect snow showers to diminish today, but an arctic blast is on its way, bringing dangerously low temperatures early next week. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Oswego County until 1 p.m. today, with up to 4 inches of additional snow possible in the most affected areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, temperatures will reach the mid-30s today but plunge this weekend as a cold front moves in. Roads may remain slick, particularly along the I-90 corridor and other major routes, as snow persists through the morning. Drivers should exercise caution and allow extra time for commutes.
Saturday brings a mix of rain and snow, transitioning to snow by evening, with gusty winds up to 28 mph. Highs near 39 degrees will drop sharply into the 20s overnight. By Sunday, scattered snow showers and plunging temperatures will dominate, with highs barely reaching the low 20s.
NWS warns that starting Sunday night, an arctic air mass could drop wind chills to 10-20 degrees below zero across lower elevations, with even colder conditions in higher terrain. These bitter temperatures may persist into midweek, complicating travel and increasing frostbite risks for those exposed to the elements.
Residents are advised to prepare for extreme cold by securing adequate heating supplies and avoiding outdoor exposure during peak chill hours.
