Rochester, NY – A powerful lake effect snowstorm is sweeping across western and central New York, bringing up to 10 inches of snowfall and hazardous travel conditions through Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday for Wayne, Northern Cayuga, and Oswego counties, where the heaviest snowfall is expected. Further west, Orleans and Monroe counties, including Rochester, will remain under the warning until 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible in persistent bands, with wind gusts up to 35 mph creating near-whiteout conditions and dangerous travel. Roads may become snow-covered quickly, and blowing snow will further reduce visibility.
Travelers are urged to use caution, check road conditions before heading out, and allow extra time for commutes. Those in affected areas should prepare for rapidly changing weather and avoid unnecessary travel, especially overnight.
Residents are encouraged to report snowfall amounts to the NWS Buffalo through their website or social media.
