New York, NY – Hot and humid weather will grip New York City, Long Island and much of the surrounding region through Wednesday, with Heat Advisories in effect and dangerous beach conditions developing along the Atlantic coast.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday through 9 p.m. Wednesday for most of the forecast area. Additional advisory timing applies to portions of Suffolk County and southeast Connecticut, where the advisory begins Wednesday morning.

Tuesday’s high temperatures will climb into the upper 90s, with heat index values approaching or reaching 100 degrees, especially across southern and eastern portions of the region. Conditions will remain warm overnight, with lows only dropping into the upper 70s to lower 80s for northeast New Jersey, New York City and much of Long Island.

The hottest conditions continue Wednesday, when afternoon highs are expected to reach the upper 90s to near 100 degrees, with heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees possible. The National Weather Service warns the prolonged heat and humidity will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for older adults, young children and those without access to air conditioning.

In addition to the heat, a high risk of dangerous rip currents is forecast at Atlantic Ocean beaches today and Wednesday. Beachgoers are urged to swim only at beaches with lifeguards and follow all posted safety warnings.

Forecasters also note there is a chance for isolated thunderstorms late Wednesday into Wednesday evening, which could provide localized relief but also produce brief hazardous weather.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors.
