Hempstead, NY – A New York State Trooper was injured Saturday afternoon after a vehicle struck his patrol car on Long Island’s Southern State Parkway. The accident occurred near the Exit 22N ramp shortly after 2:30 p.m., as the trooper re-entered his vehicle following a traffic stop.
According to the New York State Police, the trooper was struck by a passing motorist while attempting to merge back into traffic. Paramedics transported him to Nassau University Medical Center after he complained of pain. Medical evaluations suggest he does not have any serious injuries.
The incident underscores the risks law enforcement officers face daily, especially during routine roadside stops. It also highlights the importance of New York’s “Move Over Law,” which requires drivers to slow down and switch lanes when approaching emergency vehicles.
Authorities emphasize that obeying this law can prevent accidents and safeguard the lives of law enforcement and emergency responders on highways.
This accident serves as a reminder for drivers to stay alert and give space to emergency personnel working on roadways.
