Syracuse, New York – Severe thunderstorms are set to slam Central New York Tuesday afternoon, with the greatest impacts expected from Ithaca and Bath northeast through Syracuse and Utica. Residents in these areas should prepare for damaging winds, large hail, and the potential for isolated tornadoes as storms sweep through late Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the highest risk for hail larger than one inch and damaging wind gusts—up to 60 mph—will peak from Steuben County to Oneida County between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday. Forecasters warn that localized tornadoes are also possible in this corridor, while heavy downpours may lead to brief flooding on roads and low-lying areas.
Cities including Ithaca, Elmira, Bath, and Syracuse are under an enhanced risk for severe weather. Travel on I-81 and NY-13 could become hazardous during the evening commute. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge mobile devices in advance, and avoid non-essential travel as storms approach. Power outages and tree damage are likely, particularly in rural and wooded areas.
