Binghamton, NY – Flood warnings have been issued for portions of New York as the Tioughnioga River in Cortland and the West Branch Delaware River in Walton are expected to rise above flood stage beginning Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton, the Tioughnioga River is forecast to exceed its flood stage of 8.0 feet late Thursday morning, cresting at 8.6 feet by Thursday evening. Minor flooding could result in road closures along Kellogg Road, south of Cortland. The river is expected to fall below flood stage by early Friday afternoon.
In Walton, the West Branch Delaware River is expected to reach its flood stage of 9.5 feet late Wednesday night, cresting at 9.7 feet early Thursday morning before receding by Thursday afternoon. Flooding could impact the fairgrounds in the area.
Motorists are advised not to drive through flooded roads or around barricades. Additional flood updates are available at www.weather.gov. The next official NWS statement will be released at 10:15 a.m. Thursday.
Residents in affected areas should take necessary precautions and stay informed as river levels rise over the next 24 to 48 hours.
