Bloomfield, NM – A Bloomfield police officer has died from injuries sustained during a shooting earlier this week during a routine traffic stop.
According to the Bloomfield Police Department, Officer Timothy Ontiveros passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025, after undergoing multiple surgeries following a shooting that occurred on the night of Monday, May 26. Ontiveros was shot multiple times by a driver during a traffic stop in Bloomfield, New Mexico.
The department said Ontiveros was initially treated at San Juan Regional Medical Center before being transferred to Albuquerque on Tuesday, May 27, once he was stable enough for transport. Despite efforts by medical teams, he succumbed to his injuries six days later.
“Officer Ontiveros was a valued member of the Bloomfield Police Department,” Police Chief Phillip Francisco said in a statement. “We are all grieving his loss and ask for your prayers and support for the family of Officer Ontiveros and the Bloomfield Police Department.”
Ontiveros joined the Bloomfield Police Department in December 2024. He previously served with the Farmington Police Department and volunteered as a firefighter with the Aztec Fire Department since 2017.
Funeral and procession details are still being finalized and will be released at a later date, police officials confirmed.
