Albuquerque, NM – A High Wind Warning has been issued across much of New Mexico, with damaging gusts expected to reach up to 70 mph Monday and Tuesday. The warning, in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST Monday, covers South Central Highlands, Upper Tularosa Valley, Quay County, Eastern San Miguel County, and several other regions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque, strong southwest winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 70 mph will pose significant hazards, including power outages and difficult travel conditions for high-profile vehicles. Areas of blowing dust may also reduce visibility below one mile at times.
A High Wind Watch has also been issued from Tuesday morning through the afternoon for additional regions, including Chaves County, Union County, and the South Central Mountains. Winds are expected to shift from the west to northwest, maintaining gusts up to 70 mph in certain areas.
Residents are advised to secure loose objects, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain indoors where possible. The NWS warns that fallen trees and power lines could cause widespread outages, and blowing dust may create hazardous driving conditions.
Motorists, particularly those driving high-profile vehicles, are urged to exercise caution. Officials recommend monitoring local forecasts for updates as conditions develop.
