Clayton, NJ – The New Jersey Forest Fire Service will conduct prescribed burns today, Feb. 27, in Gloucester County as part of an effort to reduce wildfire risks.
According to the Forest Fire Service, controlled burns are planned for two locations within the Glassboro Wildlife Management Area: Clayton Borough and Monroe Township. These burns are weather-dependent and subject to change.
Prescribed fires help manage forest fuel buildup, reducing the potential spread of wildfires. They also improve habitats for wildlife, control insect populations, and recycle nutrients into the soil. The burns are typically scheduled between February and early April when conditions allow for safe and effective fire management.
Residents may see smoke in the affected areas. If there is uncertainty about the source of smoke or fire, authorities advise calling 9-1-1 or the DEP’s 24-hour hotline at 877-WARN-DEP (877-927-6337).
