Boston, MA – Residents across western New England should prepare for the possibility of severe thunderstorms Sunday evening, with forecasters warning that damaging wind gusts could develop between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across western portions of Massachusetts and Connecticut during the evening hours. Some of those storms could become severe, with damaging straight-line winds identified as the primary threat.

The highest risk area includes western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut, where the Storm Prediction Center has placed communities under a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather. Cities including Springfield, Greenfield, Amherst and surrounding areas are among those most likely to experience stronger storms.

Forecasters said frequent lightning will accompany many of the storms, while small hail is considered a secondary threat. Residents with outdoor plans are encouraged to closely monitor changing weather conditions and be prepared to move indoors quickly if storms approach.

After the initial severe weather threat, thunderstorms are expected to become more widespread late Sunday night and continue into the overnight hours through approximately 4 a.m. Monday. While severe weather chances decrease overnight, periods of heavy rain and lightning remain possible.

The strongest storms may produce localized tree damage, isolated power outages and hazardous travel conditions, particularly during the evening commute and outdoor events.

The National Weather Service recommends having multiple ways to receive warnings and remaining weather-aware throughout the evening. Those attending outdoor activities should be prepared to seek sturdy shelter immediately if thunder is heard or a warning is issued.

Forecasters will continue monitoring storm development throughout the day, and additional watches or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.
