Buffalo, NY – Millions of residents across western and central New York are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch Sunday afternoon and evening as forecasters warn of potentially damaging winds, hail and frequent lightning.

According to the National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 334 remains in effect until 10 p.m. EDT Sunday for a large portion of Upstate New York, including Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown, Jamestown, Olean, Ithaca and surrounding communities.

The primary threat from storms moving through the region will be scattered wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph. Forecasters also say isolated hail up to quarter size is possible, along with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.

The watch stretches across much of western and central New York, including areas along Interstates 90, 81 and 86. The National Weather Service estimates more than 4.2 million people are within the watch area, along with more than 1,200 schools and dozens of hospitals.

A severe thunderstorm watch means atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms. Not every location will experience severe weather, but residents should remain weather-aware and be prepared to seek shelter if warnings are issued.

Storms capable of producing damaging winds can bring down tree limbs, cause scattered power outages and create hazardous travel conditions, especially during the evening hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts, keep mobile devices charged and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. Those with outdoor plans should be prepared to move indoors quickly if storms approach.

The watch is scheduled to expire at 10 p.m., though additional watches or warnings could be issued depending on storm development later Sunday.
