ELKO, Nev. – Dangerous travel conditions are developing across northern and central Nevada Wednesday as powerful winds lift widespread dust, cutting visibility and creating road hazards. The National Weather Service in Elko has issued Blowing Dust Advisories for Humboldt, Eureka, Lander, and Elko counties until 7 p.m. PST, with winds expected to stay strong in Humboldt County through 10 p.m. PST.

According to the NWS Elko office, southwest winds are blowing 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching 45 mph. The strongest winds are hitting open valleys and U.S. 50, I-80, and State Route 278 corridors, where drivers may encounter visibility dropping below one mile at times. Blowing dust could briefly reduce visibility to near zero, especially in rural stretches between Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, and Eureka.

Officials warn motorists to avoid travel during sudden dust bursts and to pull safely off the road if visibility drops. Drivers should turn off lights and avoid using brakes to prevent being rear-ended. Those with respiratory conditions should remain indoors until conditions improve. High-profile vehicles, including trucks and RVs, could be difficult to control in crosswinds.

The NWS urges residents to secure outdoor objects and prepare for possible isolated power outages as tree limbs weaken in gusty conditions. Winds will gradually subside late this evening, with calmer weather expected overnight into Thursday morning.
