WINTHROP, Wash. – A major early-season mountain snowstorm is hammering Washington’s North Cascades, where up to 16 inches of new snow could blanket Washington Pass by Friday morning. The National Weather Service in Spokane has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 10 a.m. PST Friday for elevations above 4,000 feet in western Okanogan County.
According to the NWS Spokane office, heavy snow will continue through Thursday night, with the most intense bands developing late Thursday. Snowfall rates may reach one inch per hour at times, especially near the Cascade crest and along Highway 20 over Washington Pass, where travel could become treacherous or even impossible. Snow levels will gradually lower from 5,000 feet tonight to near 4,000 feet by Thursday night, spreading winter conditions to additional high-elevation routes.
Drivers are urged to delay travel across the North Cascades if possible. Chains and winter tires are strongly recommended for those crossing Washington Pass. The Washington State Department of Transportation advises keeping extra food, water, and emergency supplies in vehicles in case of road closures or delays.
Periods of blowing snow may further reduce visibility, especially in exposed areas. The heaviest snow will taper off by Friday morning as colder air settles in behind the system, leaving icy conditions for the morning commute.
