Elko, Nevada – Residents across eastern Nevada should brace for a rare summer freeze as temperatures drop into the upper 20s overnight, threatening crops, gardens, and unprotected plumbing.

According to the National Weather Service in Elko, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from midnight Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday for Elko, White Pine, Eureka, and surrounding counties, including high-elevation zones like the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range. Lows are expected to range between 27°F and 33°F.

Cities at risk include Elko, Ely, Eureka, Spring Creek, and Ruth, where frost-sensitive plants may not survive the sudden drop. The cold snap could also damage outdoor pipes if left exposed. Homeowners are urged to cover vegetation, disconnect hoses, and insulate plumbing before midnight.

Though late June freezes are unusual, they’re not unprecedented in Nevada’s high desert elevations. Gardeners and ranchers should act now to minimize losses, especially in Diamond Valley, Jarbidge, and Tuscarora, where temperatures are projected to bottom out before sunrise.

The warning expires at 8 a.m. Sunday, but residents should stay alert in case additional advisories are issued if cold conditions persist.
