Reno, NV – Parts of northwest Nevada are under a critical fire weather alert today as dry and windy conditions are expected to intensify. A shortwave trough moving through central California into western Nevada will create a surface trough, leading to increased fire danger.

According to the National Weather Service, winds in the Reno area could reach 20-25 mph this afternoon, with humidity levels dropping as low as 10-20%. These conditions, combined with dry vegetation, create a high risk for wildfires.

The northern Great Basin, including far southern Idaho, is also under a fire weather advisory, with broadly elevated conditions expected. In addition to the winds, isolated thunderstorms may develop from north-central California into central Idaho, which could further complicate firefighting efforts.

Residents in the affected areas, especially those in Reno and surrounding communities, are advised to avoid any activities that could spark a fire and to remain vigilant for emergency updates.
