Hastings, Nebraska – Severe thunderstorms are expected to rapidly develop by 6 p.m. Sunday, threatening evening travel and power reliability across central and southern Nebraska, especially along the I-80 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a marginal to enhanced risk is in place through 1 a.m. Monday. Storms will begin forming late afternoon, then intensify into the evening with hazards including hail up to half-dollar size and wind gusts near 65 mph. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

The highest impacts are expected from cities including Kearney, Grand Island, Hastings, and Holdrege, extending south toward the Kansas border. Storms may track east along and south of I-80, affecting major routes like Highway 281 and Highway 6. Brief but intense downpours could reduce visibility and create localized flooding on roadways.

Residents should secure outdoor items before 5 p.m., charge devices, and prepare for possible power interruptions. Avoid travel during peak storm hours and never drive through flooded roads.

Storm activity is expected to weaken after 1 a.m. Monday, though additional updates may be issued if the threat zone shifts or intensifies.
