Austin, Texas – Triple-digit heat index values will build quickly this afternoon, pushing outdoor conditions into dangerous territory by mid to late afternoon across Central and South Texas, especially along the I-35 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, heat index values will reach 98 to 102 degrees between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday, with Austin near 100 degrees and San Antonio around 99 to 101 degrees. The elevated humidity, fueled by recent rainfall, is intensifying how hot it feels despite air temperatures mainly in the upper 80s to mid-90s.

Cities including New Braunfels, San Marcos, Georgetown, and Del Rio will see similar conditions, with peak readings near 102 to 104 degrees possible through early next week. I-35, I-10, and surrounding roadways could see increased vehicle strain and higher risk for heat-related breakdowns during peak afternoon hours.

At the same time, isolated thunderstorms may develop after 2 p.m. Saturday, mainly east of I-35. Any storm could produce wind gusts over 60 mph, hail, and dangerous lightning, briefly impacting travel and outdoor events.

Limit outdoor activity during peak heat, drink water every 20 minutes, and check on vulnerable populations. If storms approach, move indoors immediately.

Heat and storm risks will persist through Sunday evening, with another round of triple-digit heat index values expected before gradual relief arrives early next week.
