Omaha, NE – A powerful winter storm is gripping parts of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa, with heavy snowfall and strong winds making travel hazardous through Sunday night. The National Weather Service has issued both Winter Storm Warnings and Blizzard Warnings for the area.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), areas such as Jefferson and Gage counties in Nebraska could see snow accumulations of up to 13 inches, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph. In parts of Iowa, including Fremont and Page counties, snowfall totals could reach 12 inches. Dangerous wind chills and blowing snow will severely reduce visibility, with travel discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

Snow began falling late Saturday and is expected to continue through Sunday night. Blizzard conditions are likely to develop by early Sunday morning and persist through midnight. Drivers on major roadways, including Interstate 29 and Highway 75, are urged to exercise extreme caution.

Residents should prepare for the possibility of power outages and ensure they have emergency supplies, including flashlights, extra food, and water. If travel is unavoidable, authorities recommend keeping a winter survival kit in your vehicle.

The NWS forecasts gradual clearing by Monday morning, but sub-zero wind chills could linger. By Tuesday, temperatures are expected to rise slightly, with highs near 20°F.

For real-time updates, residents can call 511 for road conditions in Nebraska and Iowa or visit the National Weather Service website for additional weather alerts.
