Des Moines, IA – A winter storm is sweeping across southern Iowa today, bringing heavy snow, gusting winds, and travel hazards. Snowfall totals are expected to reach up to 9 inches in areas south of Highway 30, with the heaviest accumulation near the Missouri border. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 3 a.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will taper off by late Sunday evening, but strong north winds, gusting up to 35 mph, could create minor blowing and drifting. Temperatures will drop overnight, with wind chills reaching as low as -5 degrees. Residents are urged to delay non-essential travel and to pack emergency kits, including blankets and water, in case of roadside emergencies.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, especially on bridges and overpasses. The Iowa Department of Transportation advises drivers to check real-time conditions using the Iowa 511 app or website.

Monday will bring some relief as skies clear and temperatures reach a high near 20 degrees. However, the cold will persist into the week, with lows plunging to 4 degrees Tuesday night and highs struggling to reach the mid-20s through Thursday.

Travelers in southern Iowa should prepare for difficult conditions through early Monday and expect ongoing weather-related delays. Stay updated with forecasts and use caution when venturing out.
