West Lafayette, IN – The Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) made a substantial impact in 2023 by collecting and safely disposing of 324,665 pounds of unused medicine, protecting waterways from contamination.
According to IISG, this initiative was part of a broader effort to improve water quality and promote sustainable practices in the Great Lakes region. In addition to medicine disposal, the program collaborated with over 80 suburban communities to develop long-term water supply plans. It also helped manage 1.2 million gallons of water runoff through newly constructed rain gardens in urban areas, reducing pollution and flooding risks.
Chicago-area educators also benefited from IISG’s work, with 19 teachers receiving training in aquaponic systems to enhance science education in classrooms. These achievements highlight IISG’s commitment to addressing critical environmental challenges, including pollution, habitat loss, and climate adaptation.
Funded by NOAA and supported by institutions such as Purdue University and the University of Illinois, IISG continues to foster collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and local communities to ensure a sustainable future for the southern Lake Michigan region.
