Charleston, SC – The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has introduced a new experimental cone graphic aimed at better communicating the risks associated with tropical cyclones for both inland and coastal regions of the United States. This updated graphic is designed to include U.S. inland tropical storm and hurricane watches and warnings, addressing a gap in current forecasting tools that typically emphasize coastal areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this experimental cone graphic, which will be available starting August 15, 2024, is expected to enhance public understanding of potential wind risks inland without overwhelming users with excessive data. The new cone will be shaded in white, highlighting the distinction between the inland and coastal threat areas.
The NHC is encouraging public feedback on this experimental product during its initial rollout phase. Users can access the new graphic and provide their input via the NHC website. Based on the feedback received, the NHC will determine whether further adjustments are necessary before the cone graphic becomes a permanent part of their forecasting tools.
