Houston, TX – In the coming days, Earth is set to witness close encounters with five asteroids, ranging in size from a bus to an airplane. The first asteroid, named 2024 QM1, is approximately 63 feet in diameter, about the size of a house. This asteroid will make its closest approach to Earth today, September 1, 2024, coming within 1.16 million miles of our planet.
Another house-sized asteroid, 2021 RB16, measuring around 47 feet, will pass by Earth on the same day at a distance of 2.93 million miles.
Two airplane-sized asteroids, 2024 QK1 and 2007 RX8, each measuring between 98 to 140 feet, will also approach Earth on September 1 and 2, 2024. The closest of these will pass by at 1.98 million miles.
Lastly, a bus-sized asteroid, 2021 JT, measuring about 38 feet, will pass within 3.89 million miles of Earth on September 1, 2024.
NASA’s Asteroid Watch program continues to monitor these asteroids closely. While none of these space rocks pose any danger to Earth, their close approaches provide valuable opportunities for observation and study, helping scientists better understand the behavior of near-Earth objects.
