Murder Investigation Launched After Morris Motel Death, Suspect Arrested

Morris, IL – Police have arrested a man in connection with the homicide of a 65-year-old discovered dead in a Morris motel room Monday afternoon.

Officers responded to a call around 3:25 p.m. regarding an unresponsive person at a motel in the 1900 block of Division Street. Upon arrival, officers found a 65-year-old man deceased with visible signs of trauma. Police launched a homicide investigation with assistance from the Grundy County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators.

Investigators quickly identified the suspect as Cody A. Atkinson, a 28-year-old Morris resident who was also staying at the motel. Authorities stated that there is no known relationship between the victim and Atkinson.

Atkinson was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. He remains in custody at the Grundy County Jail. Police continue to investigate the incident, and further details are expected to be released as they become available. Authorities are withholding the victim’s name until family notifications have been made.

Community members expressed condolences for the victim’s family, while police assured residents of their commitment to a thorough investigation.
