Montgomery County, TX – A 27-year-old man was taken into custody Friday following an investigation into a fraudulent vehicle sale tied to an ongoing auto theft case in Montgomery County.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest happened May 1, 2026, after the Auto Theft Task Force, working alongside East Patrol Command Crime Reduction Unit K9 officers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, conducted an interdiction operation. Investigators had received information the suspect would attempt to sell a stolen vehicle using a fraudulent title.

Following a traffic stop on the vehicle in question, authorities identified the suspect as Dillard Joseph Davis, who was allegedly taken into custody without incident.

According to officials, Davis was wearing a GPS ankle monitor at the time of his arrest, issued by Harris County in connection to prior felony charges. He was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and has been charged with Forgery of a Government Document.

Authorities say the recovered vehicle is part of a broader, multi-agency investigation into auto theft and fraud across Montgomery County and surrounding areas in the Houston metro region.

Officials are urging residents to take precautions when purchasing vehicles, especially through online marketplaces or private sellers. Buyers should verify that the seller matches the name on the title and confirm the vehicle identification number through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Law enforcement also recommends using reputable dealerships and conducting independent vehicle history checks.
