Billings, Mont. – Slushy snow and gusty winds are making for a treacherous Tuesday morning commute across parts of southern Montana and northern Wyoming, with several highways impacted by slick conditions and reduced visibility.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon MDT for the Beartooth and Red Lodge foothills, the Sheridan and Big Horn areas, and higher terrain along the Bighorn Mountains. Up to five inches of snow is expected in elevated areas, especially near Burgess Junction along US-14, where winds could gust up to 40 mph.

US-212 near Red Lodge and Highway 78 from Red Lodge to Roscoe are experiencing hazardous travel due to wet snow and patchy ice. Drivers along I-90 west of Sheridan should also watch for slush-covered roads, especially on bridges and overpasses. Most accumulation is sticking to grassy surfaces, but roads remain slick under the continued snowfall.

Travelers should use caution, reduce speed, and allow extra time this morning. Recreational access to the mountains, particularly near Story and the higher elevations of the Bighorns, will be limited due to snow and wind.

Conditions are expected to improve by early afternoon, but additional advisories may be issued if snow lingers in higher terrain.
