Helena, MT – A statewide alert has been issued warning Montanans about a recent scam involving fraudulent text messages posing as the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Montana Highway Patrol and the Montana Department of Justice announced that residents have reported receiving texts claiming they owe unpaid traffic tickets or toll fees. The messages threaten action from the “DMV” if the supposed debt is not paid immediately.

According to the Montana Department of Justice, these messages are part of a scam. The Motor Vehicle Division does not send texts demanding payment or threatening legal consequences. Authorities emphasize that residents should never provide personal or financial information in response to such messages.

“If you receive one of these texts, do not respond,” the department stated. “Report the message immediately to the Office of Consumer Protection.” Reports can be filed at https://dojmt.gov/office-of-consumer-protection.

Officials are encouraging all residents to remain vigilant and share the warning with friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable to online fraud.

The Department of Justice said it continues to monitor the situation and work with law enforcement to track the origin of the scam messages. Anyone who has already provided information or made a payment is urged to contact their bank and local authorities immediately.

This alert follows a growing national trend of scammers targeting drivers with fake citations and fee demands. Law enforcement urges the public to verify any suspicious communication directly through official state websites or hotlines.
