Mojave, CA – High winds are expected to continue sweeping across the Mojave Desert Slopes through early Friday, prompting a wind advisory from the National Weather Service.

According to the NWS Hanford office, the advisory remains in effect until 5 a.m. Friday. West winds between 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, will impact the area throughout Thursday and into the overnight hours. The strongest gusts are anticipated along exposed slopes and open desert areas, particularly near the city of Mojave.

Residents should expect unsecured outdoor items to be blown around, and there’s an increased risk of falling tree limbs and isolated power outages. Drivers—especially those operating high-profile vehicles—are urged to use extra caution when traveling through the region.

The Mojave Desert is no stranger to strong springtime winds, but forecasters note these gusts are on the higher end of typical April conditions. Motorists using Highway 58 and nearby desert routes should prepare for reduced visibility and potential detours.

Officials recommend securing loose objects outdoors and avoiding unnecessary travel during peak gust periods. The advisory is expected to expire at 5 a.m. Friday unless extended or upgraded by the NWS.
