Kansas City, Missouri — Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across Missouri Sunday evening, with the greatest impact between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. as storms bring large hail and damaging winds capable of downing trees and disrupting travel in Kansas City, St. Joseph, Columbia and Jefferson City.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a cold front moving south will trigger scattered storms Sunday evening, with another round likely Monday evening as the boundary lingers across the region.

This is part of a broader system driving repeated storm development across the central Plains, increasing the risk of multiple rounds of severe weather and cumulative impacts.

Storms may produce large hail capable of damaging vehicles and roofs, along with wind gusts strong enough to knock down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages. Heavy rain could also create rapid ponding on low-lying roads and underpasses, especially along I-70 and I-35 corridors where visibility may drop quickly during peak commute hours.

Drivers should avoid travel during severe storms, move vehicles under cover to prevent hail damage and monitor warnings as conditions change rapidly.

The most dangerous conditions will occur between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday, when storms are most likely to intensify and impact evening travel.
