St. Louis, Missouri – Severe thunderstorms are already impacting parts of eastern Missouri and southern Illinois this morning, with dangerous conditions expected through 10 a.m. that could disrupt the commute and cause power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 a.m. CDT for a large portion of the region, including St. Louis, Jefferson City, Farmington, and into southern Illinois cities like Alton and Carbondale. Storms may produce wind gusts up to 75 mph, hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and a few tornadoes.
The most significant impacts are expected along major travel routes including I-70, I-44, I-55, and I-64, where heavy rain and strong winds could reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions during peak morning hours. Areas from Columbia to Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff are also included in the watch zone.
Residents should remain indoors during storms, avoid unnecessary travel, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Secure loose outdoor items immediately and be prepared to take shelter if warnings are issued.
Storms are expected to move east or weaken by late morning, but additional alerts may be issued if conditions intensify. The next updates are expected within the hour as storms continue to track across the region.
