St. Louis, MO – Missouri is experiencing an unseasonable cold snap that has shattered multiple temperature records. Frigid temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday broke century-old marks in several cities.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in St. Louis, Wednesday’s cold high temperatures set records in St. Louis (18°F), Columbia (13°F), and Quincy (12°F). Columbia’s previous record of 15°F had stood since 1929.
On Thursday morning, Columbia hit -6°F, breaking its 1929 record of 0°F. Quincy and St. Louis came close but did not surpass past records. NWS reports another cold day ahead, with more records in jeopardy.
St. Louis’ coldest high for February 20 stands at 18°F, set in 1896. Columbia’s 21°F record dates to 1918, and Quincy’s was last set in 2013. If temperatures remain low, these benchmarks may fall.
Officials urge residents to dress warmly and check on vulnerable individuals. Extreme cold increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
