Temperatures are plunging across northeast Mississippi, bringing snow and freezing rain to the Golden Triangle area. Hazardous road conditions are now impacting major routes, including US 82, making travel treacherous.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, snow is accumulating across the region, with precipitation shifting to a wintry mix in the coming hours. Roads north of I-20, particularly along US 82, are icy and dangerous, with travel delays expected. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel and exercise extreme caution if driving is unavoidable.

Friday’s forecast includes continued precipitation, with highs near 40°F and a wintry mix persisting into the morning hours. By Saturday, conditions will improve as clouds decrease and temperatures rise to 43°F. Frost is expected Saturday night, posing additional risks for early Sunday travelers.

The five-day outlook predicts mostly sunny skies for Sunday and Monday, with highs climbing to the mid-50s, offering a respite from the icy start to the weekend. However, colder overnight temperatures, dropping as low as 26°F on Monday, could lead to frost in some areas.

Residents in northeast Mississippi are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and report any ice, snow, or hazardous conditions. Travelers should review road safety advisories before heading out and avoid high-risk areas if possible.

Stay informed and prepare for rapidly changing conditions by planning ahead and dressing warmly during this wintry stretch.
