Jackson, MS – Heavy rain is expected to continue across much of Mississippi today, with the National Weather Service warning that flash flooding is likely in parts of the state as repeated thunderstorms produce torrential rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the greatest flood threat extends across north-central to east-northeast Mississippi, where 3 to 5 inches of rain are expected in a short period, with locally higher amounts possible. An Elevated (Level 2 of 4) flash flood risk is in place from noon through midnight.

Communities including Greenwood, Yazoo City, Eupora, Philadelphia, Columbus, and surrounding areas face the highest flooding threat. Additional portions of central and southern Mississippi, including the Jackson area, remain under a Limited (Level 1) flood risk, where 2 to 4 inches of rain could still lead to localized flash flooding.

Forecasters warn that roads may quickly become flooded or impassable, especially in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage. Some structures could also be threatened if the heaviest rainfall repeatedly affects the same communities.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware throughout the day, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and avoid traveling through flooded roadways. Even shallow floodwaters can conceal washed-out pavement or strong currents.

The heavy rain threat is expected to continue into tonight before conditions gradually improve. Additional Flood Watches or Flash Flood Warnings may be issued as storms develop.
