Jackson, Miss. – Dangerously high heat will blanket Mississippi through the weekend, with heat index values soaring above 100° in many cities, making outdoor activity hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, maximum heat index readings will climb each day from Tuesday through Sunday. Areas like Jackson, Meridian, and Vicksburg could see heat index values hit 105° by Friday, with elevated heat stress continuing through at least June 15. Hattiesburg, Brookhaven, and Starkville are also in the red zone for extreme heat impacts.
Cities including Greenwood, Greenville, and Natchez will experience “feels-like” temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s, creating dangerous conditions for those without air conditioning or access to shade. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor work to early morning or late evening hours, drink water frequently, avoid alcohol, and wear light-colored clothing and sunscreen.
Mississippi has seen similar early summer heat surges before, but the multi-day stretch of triple-digit heat indices raises concern for heat-related illnesses, especially for the elderly and outdoor workers.
Heat advisories are expected to remain in place through late Sunday. Additional warnings may be issued as conditions evolve.
