Minnesota wakes to a brutal stillness along the North Shore as bitter air presses down on Duluth and the Arrowhead. Snow squeaks under boots, engines strain to turn over, and the cold bites exposed skin almost instantly.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through midday for much of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, while the broader Hazardous Weather Outlook warns of wind chills between 30 and 45 degrees below zero in the Arrowhead and north-central Minnesota. Frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes under these conditions.
In Duluth, air temperatures sit near minus 10 early with northwest winds pushing wind chills close to minus 30. Skies remain mostly clear, which offers sunshine but no warmth. Travel remains possible, but drivers should prepare for slow starts, stiff steering, and reduced vehicle reliability. Along I-35 and Highway 53, crews warn that mechanical failures rise sharply during extreme cold.
Residents are urged to wear full winter protection, including face coverings and insulated gloves. Keep phones charged, fuel tanks full, and emergency kits ready if traveling. Pets should remain indoors, and vulnerable neighbors may need extra help staying warm.
Cold conditions linger into Tuesday morning before easing slightly by afternoon. Even then, highs struggle to reach the single digits. Wednesday through Friday remain cold, with highs mostly in the single digits to teens. Winds stay lighter midweek, which reduces wind chill severity, but subzero mornings continue.
Looking ahead, longer-range outlooks suggest precipitation chances drop into early February while temperatures slowly moderate. Even so, winter keeps its grip on the Northland, and cold-weather precautions remain essential for several more days.
