Duluth, Minnesota – Storms could rapidly turn severe by mid-afternoon Friday across northern Minnesota, but only if enough heat and humidity build before a cold front arrives.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the severe threat remains highly conditional, with two very different outcomes possible by around 4 p.m. If skies clear and temperatures rise, storms could intensify quickly, producing damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes across the region.

However, if clouds and scattered showers linger through the morning, instability may never fully develop. In that case, northern Minnesota, including Duluth, Hibbing, and the Iron Range, would see more widespread rain and non-severe thunderstorms instead of organized severe weather.

This “boom or bust” setup places uncertainty on timing and impacts, but areas across the Arrowhead and into northwest Wisconsin should still be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Any stronger storms that do form could develop quickly with little lead time.

Residents should stay alert through the afternoon hours, monitor real-time warnings, and be ready to take shelter if severe weather develops. Additional updates are expected as conditions evolve toward the late afternoon window.
