Duluth, Minn. – Residents across northeastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin should prepare for strong storms Thursday afternoon and evening, with heavy rain and wind gusts up to 40 mph possible by nightfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, the greatest chance for severe thunderstorms is after 4 p.m. Thursday, particularly across northwest Wisconsin. Storms may bring bursts of heavy rainfall, isolated lightning, and strong winds that could impact evening travel across U.S. Highway 53, I-35, and local roads in Duluth, Superior, and surrounding communities.

Winds will increase ahead of the storms, with gusts reaching 25 to 40 mph in some areas. Rainfall totals between a half and three-quarters of an inch are expected, with higher amounts possible in localized downpours. Power outages and minor flooding in low-lying areas can’t be ruled out.

This system follows a stretch of cooler, cloudy weather and marks the region’s most active thunderstorm event in recent weeks.

Storms are expected to move out overnight, but gusty winds and showers will linger into Friday. Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and monitor for any updated weather alerts.
