MILWAUKEE, WI – A 31-year-old male is dead following a chaotic series of events that led to an officer-involved shooting on the city’s south side Monday afternoon.
The incident began earlier in the day when a homicide occurred near 7th and Mitchell, leading law enforcement to search for a specific vehicle allegedly tied to the crime. According to the Milwaukee Police Department, officers spotted the vehicle at approximately 4:47 p.m. near the 1700 block of North 35th Street after it was allegedly involved in a separate “shots fired” incident. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the suspect allegedly fled, sparking a vehicle pursuit.
According to a press release from Lieutenant Efrain Cornejo, the chase ended when the suspect vehicle crashed on South 35th Street near West National Avenue. Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect allegedly fired shots toward the officers. Eight Milwaukee officers returned fire, striking the 31-year-old male. He was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
According to police officials, a 34-year-old individual who was also involved in the crash was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries. Investigators confirmed that the suspect’s firearms were recovered at the scene and no one else was struck by the gunfire.
The eight officers involved—ranging in age from 26 to 35 and boasting experience levels from seven months to 14 years—have been placed on administrative duty per standard protocol. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is currently handling the probe, with the Wauwatosa Police Department acting as the lead agency. Authorities noted that this remains a fluid and ongoing investigation.
